Galatasaray revived their UEFA Champions League campaign with a hard-fought 4-2 victory over Lille at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy, recovering from a first-half setback to secure their first win in the competition and deepen the French side’s European struggles.
The result highlighted the Turkish club’s ability to capitalise on defensive errors, while Lille were left to rue missed opportunities and lapses at crucial moments in a six-goal encounter.
Galatasaray made an immediate impact, taking the lead just two minutes into the match when Yunus Akgün punished Alexsandro’s failure to deal with a cross, controlling the ball before firing high into the net.
Lille responded quickly, with Alexsandro making amends by initiating the move that produced the equaliser. The Brazilian defender advanced before delivering a precise pass to Soriba Diaoune, who rounded goalkeeper Ugurcan Cakir and finished into an unguarded goal.
The contest developed into an open exchange, with both teams committing players forward but struggling to maintain defensive discipline. Galatasaray briefly thought they had earned a penalty through Victor Osimhen, only for the decision to be overturned after a review showed that goalkeeper Berke Ozer had not fouled the striker.
Lille subsequently gained the advantage when Diaoune scored his second goal, converting a loose ball after Cakir had parried an effort back into the penalty area.
However, the hosts were unable to carry their lead into the interval. Roland Sallai broke down the right flank and delivered a cross that found Aleksey Batrakov unmarked in the six-yard box, allowing the midfielder to head home and restore parity at 2-2.
Galatasaray seize control after the break
The second half proved decisive as Galatasaray turned an evenly balanced contest into a two-goal victory through greater efficiency in front of goal.
Seven minutes after the restart, Lucas Torreira put the visitors ahead from a corner, getting a slight touch on the delivery as Ozer failed to prevent the ball from crossing the line at the near post.
Galatasaray extended their advantage before the hour mark when Osimhen struck from the edge of the penalty area, beating Ozer to make it 4-2. The forward kept his celebration restrained out of respect for the opposition.
Lille attempted to change the course of the match through a series of substitutions, but the hosts could not find a way past Galatasaray's defence. The visitors maintained their advantage to the final whistle, completing a comeback that underlined the importance of taking chances and limiting costly mistakes in European competition.
Contrasting fortunes in Europe
For Lille, the defeat extended their losing streak in major European competition to five matches, leaving them without a point after three games in the Champions League campaign.
Galatasaray, meanwhile, gained a valuable three points that could prove important in their push for qualification. After enduring a difficult run away from home in the competition, the Istanbul club will take encouragement from their attacking response and ability to recover from adversity.
Although their defensive performance offered room for improvement, the victory gives Galatasaray renewed momentum as they seek to move closer to the qualification places, while Lille face mounting pressure to arrest their slide.
