| Como players jubilating after scoring against Man Utd |
Manchester United’s European campaign suffered another major setback as Como produced a commanding 4-1 victory over the English giants, with Nico Paz scoring twice and setting up another goal to inspire the Italian side to a memorable result at Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia.
The defeat extended United’s winless run in all competitions to seven matches, comprising three draws and four losses, raising further questions about the team's ability to reverse its declining fortunes.
For Como, the result represented more than an impressive scoreline. In their first competitive meeting with an English opponent, Cesc Fabregas’ side demonstrated attacking confidence, tactical discipline and an ability to exploit an opponent struggling to find its footing in the Champions League.
Paz turns United’s defensive weaknesses into an opportunity
United’s problems surfaced almost immediately. For the second consecutive Champions League match, the Red Devils conceded within the opening two minutes, allowing Como to dictate the tempo from the outset.
Paz opened the scoring after receiving a pass from Lucas Da Cunha. The midfielder created space just inside the penalty area before curling an excellent finish into the far corner, giving the hosts an early advantage.
Como continued to threaten as the half progressed. Martin Baturina was denied by a timely intervention from Harry Maguire, while striker Anastasios Douvikas came close on two occasions. Goalkeeper Senne Lammens prevented one effort from finding the net, although Douvikas subsequently wasted another promising opportunity.
United struggled to establish a consistent attacking rhythm. Matheus Cunha attempted to respond with a long-range effort, but his shot sailed over the crossbar as Como maintained their lead at half-time.
The difference between the sides became even more pronounced after the restart, when Como returned with the same attacking intensity that had unsettled United in the opening period.
In the 49th minute, Paz showcased his creative ability, threading a precise pass into Douvikas’ path. The striker took his opportunity clinically, sweeping the ball into the corner beyond Lammens to double Como’s lead.
Eight minutes later, Paz struck again. The midfielder capitalised on an error by substitute Carlos Baleba, broke through on goal and calmly finished into the bottom corner to make it 3-0.
With two goals and an assist, Paz emerged as the decisive figure in a performance that exposed United’s difficulties in containing Como’s attacking movement.
Como underline their growing European ambition
Even with a three-goal cushion, Como continued to press forward rather than settle for their advantage.
United attempted to limit the damage, with Amad Diallo and Bryan Mbeumo looking for opportunities from distance. Their efforts, however, did little to change the direction of the contest.
Como added a fourth in the 76th minute when Kaiki delivered an accurate cross into the penalty area. Jacobo Ramon, left unmarked in the six-yard box, headed home to further underline the hosts’ superiority.
Joshua Zirkzee scored a late consolation for United in stoppage time, producing a well-taken finish that reduced the deficit to three goals. The strike did little to diminish Como’s achievement.
The victory gave Como two wins from their opening three matches in their maiden Champions League campaign, leaving them three points ahead of United in the competition standings.
United face mounting pressure to respond
For Manchester United, the defeat represents another damaging result in a run of performances that has yielded no victories across seven matches in all competitions.
Conceding early for the second successive Champions League outing, coupled with the defensive errors that allowed Como to establish a commanding lead, will be particular concerns for the English side.
Como, meanwhile, have reason to believe they can compete at this level. Their performance combined individual quality, clinical finishing and sustained attacking intent against an opponent with considerably greater European pedigree.
Paz’s display provided the headline contribution, but the collective performance was equally significant. Como converted their opportunities, punished United’s mistakes and maintained their attacking threat throughout the match.
While the campaign remains in its early stages, the result has established a clear contrast between a Como side building confidence on Europe's biggest club stage and a Manchester United team urgently seeking a way out of its current slump.
