Arsenal are reportedly set to return with an improved offer for Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimarães after their opening proposal was turned down.

The Premier League champions are said to have seen an initial package worth around £80 million—comprising £70 million upfront and an additional £10 million in performance-related bonuses—rejected by Newcastle, who value the Brazilian midfielder more highly.

Interest in Guimarães has intensified throughout the summer transfer window, with Arsenal identifying the 28-year-old as a key addition to strengthen Mikel Arteta's midfield ahead of the new campaign.

The North London club are also believed to be monitoring the situation at St. James' Park following the departure of manager Eddie Howe, with reports suggesting Guimarães has been linked with a possible move away from the club.

Despite the growing speculation, Newcastle remain determined to retain their skipper. Guimarães is currently with the squad at their pre-season training camp in Spain and still has two years remaining on his contract, with the club holding an option to extend the deal by a further year.

Reports indicate Arsenal are now prepared to submit a straight £80 million bid in an effort to complete the transfer. However, that figure is understood to be the maximum the Gunners are willing to pay as they await Newcastle's response.

If negotiations remain unresolved, Guimarães is expected to be available for Newcastle's pre-season friendly against Valencia on August 8.
