Former Manchester United defender Patrice Evra has offered his perspective on the impending departure of Pep Guardiola from Manchester City, suggesting off-field uncertainties may have influenced the decision.
City have confirmed that Guardiola will step down following Sunday’s final game of the season, bringing an end to a hugely successful spell that has lasted more than a decade. During his tenure, the Spaniard guided the club to 17 major trophies, including six league titles.
His exit follows prolonged speculation about his future, with reports indicating that former Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca could be next in line to take over at the Etihad.
Despite falling short in the league after a draw against AFC Bournemouth handed the title to Arsenal—their first in 22 years—Guardiola still managed to secure domestic silverware in his final campaign, lifting both the FA Cup and EFL Cup.
Speaking in a recent interview, Evra pointed to the club’s wider situation as a possible factor behind Guardiola’s decision. He maintained that the squad remains committed, highlighting players such as Erling Haaland and Rayan Cherki as unlikely to leave, particularly with Maresca potentially taking charge.
Evra emphasised that Manchester City’s structure extends beyond any single manager, but hinted that the ongoing financial case facing the club could be significant. The charges—over 100 in total—relate to alleged breaches of financial regulations between 2009 and 2018.
With no verdict yet delivered, uncertainty continues to surround the situation. Evra noted that the outcome of the case could shape the club’s future, although he believes City will remain strong if no major sanctions are imposed.
