Super-sub Mendos struck at the death to secure a dramatic draw for the Ikon Allah Boys in a pulsating NPFL MatchDay 24 clash at a packed Bako Kontagora Stadium, salvaging a measure of pride of the Minna based outfit.
The visitors drew first blood in the second minute straight from kickoff, as Henry Onyia stunned the home crowd by putting his side ahead.
Just as the hosts were beginning to find their rhythm, Bendel Insurance doubled their advantage at 37th minute through Chinedu Nwosu on a swift counterattack, leaving the home team shell-shocked as both teams transit into the change room for half time break with visitors leading comfortably.
Being the highest-scoring team in the league so far this season, many fans were optimistic that the Ikon Allah Boys could turn things around after the restart. That hope was reignited in the 59th minute when Niger Tornadoes’ top scorer, Abdulaziz Dalhatu, curled home a near-perfect free kick to reduce the deficit and spark belief in a comeback.
The hosts continued to apply intense pressure but squandered several clear-cut chances. It took a 90th-minute strike from super-sub Rickson Mendos to draw the game level and offer some relief to Majin Mohammed’s team.
Addressing the press during post-match Majin Mohammed said it wasn't the result they planned for especially after getting a valuable point on the road.
"We wanted to consolidate on the away point we got, but we have ourselves to blame because we started the game slowly and the visitors capitalized on that scored twice in the first half to leave us chasing the game."
Sunday Akinmoladun was voted Man of the match by fans for his superb display, while Abba Khalid marked his 100 NPFL appearance in the game.
