The Super Eagles of Nigeria will miss out on the 2026 World Cup in Canada, the U.S, and Mexico after being bundled out of the race by Democratic Republic of Congo on Sunday night.

Eagles lost to the Democratic Republic of Congo on penalty shoot-out,  beating the Super Eagles 4-3 to secure Africa’s sole ticket to the intercontinental play-offs scheduled for March next year.

Nigeria drew the first blood just within the first five minutes of the pulsating match when midfielder Frank Onyeka fired a shot into DR Congo’s home from the edge of the box, after which a deflection from one of the defenders rendered goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi-Nzau clueless.

However, as the tension-soaked game progressed, just after the 32nd minute, the Central Africans equalised through Mechak Elia, who converted a clever pass from Cedric Bakambu into a goal.

The game remained at one goal apiece throughout the rest of the first half of the all-important match.

But the Eagles returned to the second half of the game without Victor Osimhen.

The match finished at 1-1 after 120 minutes, resulting in a penalty shoot-out where DR Congo showed their superiority.
