FirstBank Nigeria Limited is set to continue its support for golf development in Nigeria as the 65th FirstBank Lagos Amateur Open Golf Championship holds in November at Ikoyi Club 1938, Lagos.
The tournament, considered Nigeria’s longest-running golf championship, is expected to attract amateur golfers and aspiring professionals from across the continent. Participants will compete for the championship title and valuable points towards the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR).
The competition is organised under FirstBank’s First@Sports initiative, which supports sporting events, promotes emerging talent and creates opportunities for athletes to develop their skills.
Over the years, the Lagos Amateur Open has evolved into an established event on Nigeria’s golfing calendar, offering amateur players a competitive platform to test their abilities, gain recognition and pursue further opportunities in the sport.
The tournament’s role in developing talent was reflected in the 2025 edition, when Babatunde Oyalami, representing Osun State, emerged champion after completing 54 holes with a gross score of 231.
Oyalami recorded 78 in the opening round before improving to 75 in the second. He returned another 78 in the final round to finish three shots ahead of his closest rival and secure the title.
His performance added to the championship’s record of providing golfers with opportunities to compete at a high level and demonstrate their capabilities.
With the 65th edition approaching, the focus will shift to the players seeking to succeed Oyalami and establish themselves among the tournament’s leading competitors. Organisers expect the 2026 championship to maintain its competitive character while giving emerging golfers another opportunity to showcase their abilities.
The continued staging of the Lagos Amateur Open also reinforces FirstBank’s involvement in sports development, with golf remaining a key part of its efforts to support athletic participation and talent progression.
