Manchester United are considering extending Lisandro Martinez’s contract, but the Argentine defender’s future at Old Trafford could hinge on how he maintains his fitness over the coming months.
Martinez’s existing agreement is due to expire at the end of the current season. However, United have a 12-month extension option that could keep him at the club until 2027.
The club’s decision is expected to be influenced largely by the defender’s injury history since his arrival from Ajax in July 2022. Martinez has endured a number of fitness setbacks during his time in Manchester, raising questions about his long-term reliability.
He is currently recovering from a thigh injury suffered while representing Argentina in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final against Spain in July, an issue that kept him out during the early part of the 2026/27 campaign.
Martinez’s injury problems have been a recurring concern at United. During his first season at the club, for instance, he spent 78 days on the sidelines after suffering a metatarsal fracture.
Despite those setbacks, the defender has made a positive impression with his performances at the beginning of the 2026/27 season. His current fitness levels have also reportedly encouraged United’s medical team, leaving the club increasingly open to retaining him.
For now, however, United are understood to be unwilling to commit to a longer-term deal. The club’s preference is to activate the one-year extension rather than offer a contract beyond 2027.
Martinez’s situation is therefore likely to remain under review, with United expected to reassess his future next year based on his fitness, availability and role in Michael Carrick’s plans.
