 Mexico's national team has returned a collection of luxury Rolex watches presented by American content creator Stevewilldoit after the gifts were found to conflict with FIFA's ethical guidelines.

Stevewilldoit, whose real name is Stephen Deleonardis, revealed that he spent approximately $1 million (£747,000) purchasing Rolex watches for every player and staff member in the Mexican squad.

The gifts were handed to the team on Monday during a visit by the YouTuber, a day before Mexico secured victory over Ecuador in the Round of 32 at the FIFA World Cup.

However, FIFA's Code of Ethics limits the acceptance of gifts by players, officials and team personnel. Article 21 of the code states that only items of symbolic or insignificant value may be accepted, making the expensive timepieces incompatible with the governing body's regulations.

In a statement posted on the team's official X account, Mexico confirmed that the watches had been returned following a mutual agreement among the players. The team also clarified that the gifts were offered solely on the initiative of Deleonardis and were not requested by the squad.

Mexico, one of the co-hosts of the tournament, are preparing for their Round of 16 clash against England at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City on Sunday evening local time (01:00 BST on Monday).

The team is aiming to reach the World Cup quarter-finals for the first time since the 1986 tournament, which Mexico also hosted.
