In a strategic move ahead of the 2026 Commonwealth Games, the National Sports Commission (NSC) has announced a select group of accomplished individuals as Team Nigeria Ambassadors, reinforcing preparations for the global sporting event.

The newly unveiled ambassadors comprise seasoned sports administrators, former elite athletes, and key institutional stakeholders, reflecting a deliberate effort to combine experience, influence, and technical insight.

Among those appointed are notable figures such as Mallam Saleh Ahmadu, alongside respected sports administrators including Dr. Amos Adamu, Chief Patrick Ekeji, Alhassan Yakmut, and Gbenga Elegbeleye. Many of them have previously held top positions within the NSC, bringing decades of administrative expertise to support Nigeria’s campaign.

The list also features distinguished former athletes and sports contributors, including Olympic gold medalist Daniel Igali, wrestling champion Blessing Oborodudu, Tajudeen Ogunbade, Khadijat Sulaiman, and Victor Iroele. Their inclusion is expected to strengthen athlete engagement and mentorship.

In addition, institutional representation comes from Premium Trust Bank as well as the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Wale Adeniyi, highlighting growing corporate and government backing for Nigerian sports.

According to the Commission, the selection reflects a broader strategy to merge leadership experience with athlete-focused perspectives, ensuring a more coordinated and competitive outing at the Games.

The 2026 Commonwealth Games will take place in Glasgow, Scotland, from July 23 to August 2, bringing together thousands of athletes from about 74 Commonwealth nations and territories.

This edition of the Games will feature a reduced programme of 10 sports, including athletics, swimming, boxing, cycling, and gymnastics, with para-sports fully integrated to promote inclusivity at the highest level of competition.

The announcement of the ambassadorial team signals renewed momentum by the NSC to deepen preparation efforts, improve athlete support structures, and enhance Nigeria’s performance on the international stage.
